The Dallas Mavericks are reportedly targeting free-agent shooting guard Ray Allen, who is currently contemplating on ending his Hall of Fame career and giving his NBA career another season.
The 39-year old Allen is reportedly among the Mavericks' top targets with veteran point guard Mo Williams and Jameer Nelson still on their wishlist.
Allen averaged 9.6 points, 2.0 rebounds and 2.8 assist a game, while shooting 38 percent from beyond the arc. He was one of the catalysts in the Heat's championship campaign in 2013, sinking a corner trey to extend the game into overtime in Game 6 against the San Antonio Spurs and save Miami's title bid.
The Spurs came back a year later to beat the Heat in five games of the 2014 NBA Finals series. After the Heat's defeat, Allen stressed that he's going to spend more time thinking about his future.
"One thing is for certain, to [make a decision] on my terms is the most important thing," Allen said after the Finals via Fox Sports. "Whether that is me retiring, staying here or going somewhere else, it will be on my terms. I've made it to this point, and I felt great that I have the choice to make it for myself."
According to sources, the Mavericks are iffy to present an offer to Nelson and Williams because they are waiting on Allen's decision. There are reports that the Cleveland Cavaliers are also hot after Allen, as they try to re-unite the best shooter in NBA history and LeBron James, who decided to return home after four seasons in Miami.
"Both Mavs owner Mark Cuban and GM Donnie Nelson tell us that the team is willing to hold onto the room-MLE for later in the season. But that's not the top reason it's not being given away just yet," Fox Sports reported.
"Williams and Nelson have been told that Dallas is "on-hold'' for now as Allen considers joining Cleveland and his friend LeBron James, staying with Miami or retiring."
The Mavericks have assembled a solid team this summer by acquiring Tyson Chandler and Raymond Felton in a trade with the New York Knicks and stealing restricted free-agent Chandler Parsons from the Houston Rockets with what GM Daryl Morey called an untradeable contract.
