The Philadelphia 76ers are reportedly interested in acquiring third-year shooting guard Dion Waiters, making them a possible third-party team in the blockbuster deal between the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Minnesota Timberwolves.
The Kevin Love saga continues with another spicy development after NBA insiders found out a team that might be interested to become a conduit party in the trade. According to Fox Sports, the 76ers have expressed their desire to get Waiters, who averaged 15.9 points, 3.0 assists and 2.8 rebounds a game for the Cavs last season.
"On top of all that, there are league-wide whispers of a third team perhaps getting involved in a potential Cavs-Wolves deal, whispers of the 76ers possessing a strong interest in Cavs guard Dion Waiters, whispers of another major transaction on the way. Yeah. Unreal," Fox Sports Sam Amico stated in its report.
76ers general manager Sam Hinkie has been collecting draft assets and young talents, hoping these players would develop into future cornerstones of the team.
With this development, there's a possibility that the 76ers might sacrifice veteran power forward Thaddeus Young who could end up with the Timberwolves as part of the trade package.
"@Sam Amico's latest that says Sixers are hot after Dion Waiters...wouldn't be a bit surprised to see Thad Young end up w/ Wolves too," NBA insider Jerry Zgoda.
The Sixers' interest in Waiters could be a pivotal development in the Cavs' pursuit of Love, who is also drawing interest from the Golden State Warriors and the Chicago Bulls.
The Warriors' hesitation to include budding star shooting guard Klay Thompson in the deal put their aspirations to acquire Love on a halt, while the Bulls reemerge as a possible destination following reports from ESPN NBA insiders Marc Stein and Brian Windhorst.
"Although the full extent of the Bulls' offer wasn't immediately known, it is believed Minnesota would seek a package from Chicago featuring forward Taj Gibson and defensive ace Jimmy Butler in addition to other assets," Brian Windhorst and Marc Stein of ESPN.COM reported.
Still, many analysts believed the Cavaliers still have the best trade package with 2014 no.1 overall pick Andrew Wiggins, 2014 no.1 overall pick Anthony Bennett and a 2015 first-rounder all going to the Timberwolves.
