Nigel Bethel II Gets Reinstated into Texas Tech with 3-Game Suspension after Punching Amber Battle

Nigel Bethel II has been reinstated by Texas Tech, but will be suspended for 2014's 1st three games. Nigel Bethel II is a three-star recruit from Miami who was dismissed just last month after he sucker-punched Amber Battle, who is the top scorer of Texas Tech's women's basketball team. It was on Tuesday that he was finally cleared by a grand jury, clearing all assault charges against him.

Battle has already given a statement and said that both of them were actually at fault during the fight. The fight between the two athletes actually took place during an on-campus pickup basketball match. Since they were both to blame for the incident, Battle was also punished with a one-month suspension from Texas Tech. Nigel Bethel II, on the other hand, received a three-game suspension punishment, which will take up one-fourth of the entire season.

Nigel Bethel II said in a statement that was released by the school, "I am thankful for the opportunity to come back to Texas Tech. I take full responsibility for my actions and I would like to let everyone know that this won't happen again. It's not who I am and I am sorry for the embarrassment this has caused. I want to thank Amber Battle for accepting my apology and for coming forward to say that I deserved a second chance. I would like to thank everyone at Texas Tech, including the coaches, for believing in me and giving me a second chance to show my ability and to receive an education from Texas Tech."

Kirby Hocutt, athletic director, stated that he had high hopes of the two players involved in this incident to learn some very valuable life lessons. He said, "This is an unfortunate situation with a unique set of circumstances and there are no winners. Every decision related to this case has been the right one at that particular time based upon our principles, student-athlete code of conduct and team rules."
