Samsung News 2014: World’s Largest Smartphone Manufacturers Halt Partnership With China Supplier Due to Illegal Manpower [VIDEO+REPORT]

Samsung reportedly suspends its business relationship with one of its suppliers from China after an issue of child labor was brought forth.

The number one smartphone manufacturer in the world definitely does not want to be associated with any forms of illegalities as it decides to halt doing business with one of its partners after an issue of hiring underage workers has been leaked in the media. Child labor is one of the most criticized issues in the world since young individuals are being deprived to enjoy their childhood as they become focused on work at a very young age. Although the said act has been practiced in several countries particularly those that belong in the poverty line, it is still considered as an exploitative act by many international organizations.

According to the report from Reuters, a U.S.-based China Labor Watch has discovered at least five workers without a contract at Samsung's supplier and all of them were under the age of 16. Hiring individuals below 16 years old in the said country is said to be illegal. Dongguan Shinyang Electronics and Shinyang Engineering reportedly hired these children below 18 to work and meet the quota of the production.

The watchdog's report has also emphasized that the child workers found in the said company are being paid about two-thirds of the adult employee's weekly wages even though they are all doing the same work. The child workers from Samsung's supplier in China reportedly had trouble eating proper food in the factory's cafeteria since they work on the night shift.

Although child labor is no longer a new issue in the country, it still attracts international attention since such act is believed to be a deprivation of a child's rights. If the investigation finds an evidence of child labor, it was reported that Samsung will permanently stop doing business with its supplier in China.
