Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is making big bucks at the box office. A sequel to the 2011 film "Rise of the Planet of the Apes", Dawn of the Planet of the Apes has swung back into theaters grossing in $27.7 million stateside on Friday alone.
According to the Daily Mail, the sci-fi film has raked in $73million already just on its opening weekend. According to studio estimates Sunday, the big profit means Dawn of the Planet of the Apes has scored one of the summer's best debuts.
A 20th Century Fox sequel to the Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes easily surpassed the $54.8million "Rise's" $54.8 million opening in 2011. Variety reports that the movie went on to continued earnings of $176.8 million Stateside and over $481.8 million worldwide.
The Daily Mail describes the movie refreshing with both "spectacle and substance" during the summer season with films full of hype above quality. Much like "Rise," Dawn of the Planet of the Apes reportedly has the added advantage of being critically acclaimed, with a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes cost $170 million to make. Directed by Matt Reeves and produced by Chernin Entertainment, the 3-D installment has captured critics' interest and enthusiasm, as well as movie enthusiasts. The role of the lead ape, performed by Andy Serkis, makes for an applause-worth performance as it also arrests attention from audiences worldwide.
The Dawn of the Planet of the Apes tells the tale of Caesar's tribe encountering a colony of surviving humans amidst the planet already teeming with intelligent apes.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is placed in the setting of 10 years after "Rise," and Caesar is now much more intelligent and leading an ape uprising that which threatens to dethrone man's dominance over Earth. It follows Gary Oldman, Keri Russell and Jason Clarke as they try to survive in the ape-filled world, whilst trying to make peace with the genetically evolved apes.
Chris Aronson, head of distribution at Fox said of the Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, 'When you get the kind of reviews we got and the audience actually agrees, it's the kind of rare thing where critics and audiences come together and say this is a great movie.'
According to reports, already in the works is a sequel to be directed by Reeves still, in hopes of further extending the movie franchise which began way back in 1968's Planet Of The Apes, and based on the French novel by Pierre Boulle's.
The first film was soon followed by four movies in the 1970s. In 2001, a reboot by Tim Burton was made which ultimately failed, says reports.
It appears that with recent ratings and earnings in during the weekend, the Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is a far cry from its predecessors. The film reportedly added $31.1 million overseas from 26 markets, and a global opening gross of $104.1 million.
However, despite the string debut of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes this weekend, coupled with the "impressive overall performance" of "Transformers: Age of Extinction," it is apparent that the summer box office is not doing good, being 20% behind last year's record-breaking results from "Despicable Me 2," "Grown Ups 2" and "Pacific Rim."
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes reportedly has no competition from a new release and has given the summer box office a good rise.
Meanwhile, “Transformers: Age of Extinction” has earned about $5 million on Friday for a second place finish, making it the sixth movie to cross $200 million this year, joining ranks with “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “The Lego Movie,” “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” “Maleficent” and “The Amazing Spider-Man 2.”
“Tammy”, Melissa McCarthy’s starring film, debuted at $4 million on Friday on its way to a $13 million on its second week. Variety predicts the comedy will most likely fall by 39% by Sunday, as well as earn about $57.5 million.
Another comedy, “22 Jump Street” reportedly came in fourth with this weekend with $2 million. The next weekend, it is set to reel in an estimated $6.2 million this weekend for a 37% decline. Variety reports the Sony sequel is standing to raise a total of $171.5 million.
“Earth to Echo” came in fifth with $1.8 million and would probably bring in $5.7 million by Sunday, hauling in $25 million but meaning a decline of 28%.
“Boyhood” made its way to the top 20. This makes the newcomer $102,161 for a strong $20,432 per theater average from five locations in New York and Los Angeles. It is predicted to earn about $350,000 in its debut weekend.
