When James Franco and Seth Rogan get together audiences can expect a movie that will be equal parts funny and ridicules. While fans in the US may find their newest movie, The Interview, good for a few laughs, the North Korean government is feeling quite the opposite.
Set to be released in October The Interview's premise is that a pair of talk show hosts are offered to interview North Korea's leader, Kim Jong-un. What they didn't expect is that the US government wants the two fools, Franco and Rogan, to assassinate Jong-un. From the trailer they've released it looks like the situation dissolves rapidly with tanks and gunfire being used. Like most of their films that Rogan has written this one seems to take a sarcastic look at a group of people, something that many people can enjoy.
The North Korean executive director of The Center for North Korea-US Peace, Kim Myong-chol, saw this film as being demeaning to not only them but the American government as well. Talking to the Telegraph Kim said that, "There is a special irony in this storyline as it shows the desperation of the US government and American society." His further comments laid claim that the film is similar to what has been done in other countries like Iraq and Afghanistan.
The executive director went on stating that American films were not as good as British films and that they were far too focused on assassinations and murders. "James Bond is a good character and those films are much more enjoyable," he told the newspaper." Of course in the Bond film "Die Another Day" the main villains were from North Korea and the country had strong words against the film. Their main problem being that they were portrayed as a brutal and war hungry nation.
It's tricky business in any situation to make fun of a government or group of people that are different from one another. While in America the citizens may not mind having their president openly mocked or their government made fun of, while other countries may take it as an insult. As it stands the movie is planned to be released on October 10th, and hopefully nothing bad will come from it.
