Gerry Goffin Dies at 75; Death Due to Natural Causes

Famous lyricist Gerry Goffin, 75 years old, died in his Los Angeles home on Thursday. Goffin became widely known for his songwriting partnership with then-wife Carole King during the earlier part of the 60s era. The hits that they came up with were "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman", which was sung by Aretha Franklin, "Up on the Roof", which was performed by The Drifters, and "Take Good Care of My Baby", as publicized by Bobby Vee.

However, according to fans, their most long-lasting hit was the first song that they made together. It was in the 1960s, shortly after they had their first child. They were working for Don Kirshner, a music producer under publishing company Aldon Music. This company was just a stone's throw from Broadway from the famous Brill Building in Manhattan. The latter was considered as the home of a lot of successful songwriters back then.

Goffin was out with friends that night, as they had a bowling excursion. When he went home, he found a note, written by King, on a tape recorder. King asked him to write some lyrics for a certain melody which she composed for the girl group, The Shirelles.

Goffin was able to divulge this part of his life when he was well, and he shared that the lyrics easily came to him. "Tonight you're mine, completely / You give your love so sweetly / Tonight, the light of love is in your eyes / But, will you love me tomorrow?"

They gave this collaboration the title, "Will You Love Me Tomorrow". It became one of the chart-topping songs in January of 1961. The song showed Goffin's sensitivity as a lyricist, a characteristic that strongly was strongly shown in the couple's songs.

King talked about Goffin's talents and skills as a famed lyricist. She said, "His words expressed what so many people were feeling, but didn't know how to say."

Michele Goffin shared that he died due to some natural causes.
