Same-sex marriages are now being halted in Wisconsin creating confusion to the gay couples waiting for their licenses to be issued.
Excited to be wed couples are already in the state of confusion after a federal judge issued an order which denies the issuance of gay marriage licenses. It has been confusing due to the fact that before the same-sex marriages have been halted in Wisconsin, federal Judge Barbara B. Crabb previously struck down the ban of the said kind of nuptial and even noted as unconstitutional. About 500 couples were actually expecting to be wed.
The judge's previous ruling stated that the ban preventing from two same genders to be wed in the state is a violation of the U.S. constitution. The said ruling eventually received criticisms and applause from same-sex couples that wanted to be issued with marriage licenses; however as the release of licenses have been halted in Wisconsin, clerks responsible for its issuance are now being puzzled. There is also a big question being raised regarding the validity of the licenses already issued before the judge announced her stay.
Crabb's decision to put a stay on her previous order has been found disappointing by John Knight, a lawyer for the American Civil Liberties Union, according to The Associated Press. The judge then said that her decision to halt the same-sex marriages was due to the request of Wisconsin officials and to avoid further confusion to those clerks who already issued licenses. She also expressed mix emotions with her decision.
According to Judge Crabb, she finds it difficult to halt same-sex marriages in Wisconsin after seeing the happiness in the faces of those couples who have been waiting for a long time to be finally wed. She even cited that she knows that even if the stay is temporary, many couples don't want to wait any longer. Regarding the validity of last week's issued licenses, the judge did not further clarified.
