4,000 Pounds of Beef Recalled in the US; Meat at Risk for Mad Cow

US Department of Agriculture has just released a report that Fruitland American Meat, a beef company located in Jackson, Mo. is presently recalling all of the beef they have, specifically 4,000 pounds of cow meat, due to a high risk of BSE, or Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy. This disease is otherwise termed as the infamous mad cow disease.

USDA announced on Thursday morning that a Whole Foods distribution center located in Connecticut that sells beef to different meat shops in New England have received what could be disease-stricken meat.

However, not all off the beef being sold within America have been affected. The bone-in "Rain Crow Ranch Ribeye," as well as the quartered beef carcasses that bear the establishment number EST. 2316 inside the USDA mark of inspection, are the ones being recalled.

Spokesperson of the North Atlantic Whole Foods, Heather McCready, has stated in an email that all meat shops in Massachusetts were unfortunately among the recipients of the recalled products. However, she has exempted the newest Whole Foods store in Hyannis, Mass., stating that this store was not part of the list.

The stores that have been delivered with the questionable product are located in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Maine. On a nationwide viewpoint, the recall has been applied to 34 out 383 Whole Foods stores.

McCready stated, "We are closely monitoring this issue with one of our suppliers, to ensure full compliance with the USDA's regulations and our own high quality standards for beef." She further added, "There have been no cases of reported BSE or any other illnesses associated with this product, and no products currently in our stores are affected."

According to the USDA, they did not find any indication of the cattle displaying any signs or symptoms to prove the existence of BSE in their systems.
