Oscar Nominee Martha Hyer Dies at 89

Oscar-nominated actress Martha Hyer, who has been in movies with Humphrey Bogart and Frank Sinatra, has died at 89 years old. She passed away May 31 in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Hyer was born in Fort Worth, Texas and she made her debut into the film industry with a small role in "The Locket" in 1946. Despite being handed a minor role in the film, she was not deterred and kept moving on and progressing in her career.

It was in 1954 that she finally had her big break in the comedy "Sabrina", which was also starred in by Audrey Hepburn and Bogart. She played the role of the fiancé of the character that was played by William Holden. Hyer later wrote in her memoir that Bogart was very helpful in rehearsing the movie's scenes with her.

There were reports that she once turned down a date from the young Senator John F. Kennedy himself as she was continuing with her rise to stardom. After "Sabrina", she continued to receive a lot of high-profile movie roles.

She married director C. Ray Stahl in 1951. Stahl was the one who directed "The Scarlet Spear", which happened to star Hyer. The marriage, however, ended three years later.

She married film producer Hal Wallis in 1966, and it was Wallis who brought her to New Mexico. This was for the shooting of "Red Sky at Morning." They continued to be married until Wallis died in 1986. After his death, she transferred to Santa Fe. Hyer even wrote about New Mexico in her memoir, "This country casts a spell, and it never lets go."

Despite being nominated for an Oscar award for "Some Came Running," which she lost to Wendy Hiller for "Separate Tables", she was critiqued, oftentimes harshly, for her extravagant lifestyle.

The Santa Fe New Mexican has reported that Hyer started to become recluse as she got older and only wanted to paint and hike.
