Charlie White and Tanith Belbin, both Olympic figure skaters, have just announced their engagement. White posted a photo of his long-time girlfriend Belbin and himself on Instagram, with Belbin wearing a ring on her left ring finger. The caption to the photo was, "Couldn't ask for a more beautiful setting for the best time in our life! Hashtag she said yes!!!" The proposal took place in Hawaii while they were both on vacation.
There are other photos of them together on his IG account, with a "third wheel" in most of them. Their beloved cavachon, DJ, is also one of the many things that they love together. It would seem that their love for animals helped keep them together.
Both have had their share of figure skating during the Olympics, but they did not have the chance to compete with one another. White, born in Bloomfield Hills, won a gold medal with Meryl Davis in the Sochi Winter Olympics. Belbin, on the other hand, competed with Ben Agosto and was in Canton training at the Arctic Edge.
It was in 2010 that Belbin decided to retire from competitive skating. She said, "We have accomplished and surpassed so many of our goals, from participating in two Olympic Games to pushing ourselves and developing our skills in this sport we love so much." Since then, Belbin has been getting a lot of offers on TV, including a stint on ABC's "Skating with the Stars", in addition to her job as a choreographer.
White was also one of the competitors in the top-rating "Dancing with the Stars" or "DWTS", but did not win. The winners were Davis and her dance partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy. Davis expressed her joy about the couple's engagement on Twitter with, "Congrats to these two!" with a Tweetpic of White and Belbin.
