Levittown middle school student, Audrey Zhang, wins Google's 7th annual "Doodle 4 Google" contest. Zhang is a 5th grader from Island Trees Memorial Middle School, and her "Back to Mother Nature" doodle can be seen on Google's homepage today.
Her piece as selected from more than 100,000 doodle submissions that Google received just this year. Zhang, only 11 years old, was chosen as the state winner in April, and her product was voted as the national winner from millions of people across the United States.
The contest's slogan that the doodle was supposed to be about was "If I could invent one thing to make the world a better place."
Zhang's doodle was a "transformative water purifier" that collects dirty and polluted water from lakes, rivers, and oceans, and transforms the collected muck into clean water that is safe for drinking. She shared, "To make the world a better place, I invented a transformative water purifier. It takes in dirty and polluted water from rivers, lakes, and even oceans, then massively transforms the water into clean, safe and sanitary water, when humans and animals drink this water, they will live a healthier life."
Zhang said, "I was thinking that if we didn't have water we couldn't live."
She will be getting a $30,000 college scholarship and her school will also be awarded with a $50,000 Google for Education grant for establishing and improving the school's computer lab or technology program.
Google will also be honoring Zhang's request for cleaner water by donating an amount of $20,000 in her name to a charity to bring clean water and functioning latrines to 10 different schools in Bangladesh.
Zhang was also the state winner in the same competition last year, but only reached a national finalist status. This year, however, she won the competition and was able to help improve lives in Bangladesh.
