"The Mask of Zorro" star Antonio Banderas and "Mulholland Falls" actress Melanie Griffith had one of the longest-lasting Hollywood marriages. After 18 years of marriage, 56-year-old Griffith has now filed for a divorce from the 53-year-old Banderas, with no date of separation listed.
Griffith has reportedly hired powerful divorce attorney Laura Wasser and cited irreconcilable differences as her main reason for the filing.
Banderas and Griffith first fell in love on the set of "Two Much" in 1995 and have always been haunted by rumors of a divorce since then. The odds have been against them from the very beginning, but they managed to stay together for nearly two decades. Banderas once informed the press that he had fallen in love with Griffith numerous times during the duration of their marriage.
Just this March, the couple looked happy during their Bahamas vacation. Griffith even tweeted a photo of her shirtless husband during the trip.
Their return to L.A. from their Bahamas getaway was the last time they were photographed together; both were grim-faced, despite holding each other's hand. In May, people were curious when a photo of Banderas getting cozy with another woman was spreading on the Internet. It was around this time that Griffith asked on Twitter, "Who believes in marriage and why? Or why not?"
Griffith wants to get spousal support, apart from sole physical and joint legal custody and child support of Stella, their 17-year-old daughter.
At the AFI tribute to Jane Fonda on Thursday, Griffith seemed to be in good spirits. She smiled while she walked the red carpet with Eva Longoria, with her wedding band and "Antonio" tattoo on show.
A spokesperson for both stars has announced, "We have thoughtfully and consensually decided to finalize our almost twenty years marriage in a loving and friendly manner honoring and respecting each other, our family and friends and the beautiful time we have spent together."
