King Juan Carlos Decides To Abdicate Amidst Family’s Scandal[VIDEO]

King Juan Carlos of Spain is about to step down from his throne due to health issues and his family's controversy.

The ruler of Spain recently announced his desire to abdicate his position in favor of his son, the Crown Prince Felipe. He also said that his son is now ready to take over the crown and it will soon mark as the new era of hope. King Juan Carlos' announcement of leaving his current position came in the midst of family scandals.

The king's decision to abdicate was stated in his letter addressed to Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, who also announced it in public via television. Prime Minister Rajoy added that the entire process would take place "in a context of institutional stability and as proof of the maturity of our democracy." The public announcement was made on Monday while another statement was also released later that day telling about the reasons for passing the crown to the next heir.

King Juan Carlos' decision to step down from the throne that he was entitled for almost four decades came following his health problems and his family's scandal. The 76 year-old monarch's abdication also came in the midst of the decline of his popularity which is mainly a result of the corruption scandal where his son-in-law was involved. The said scandal eventually put the royal family's lifestyle and finances in the main picture.

Image of the royal family has been tarnished with the spending habits of Princess Cristina, and her husband, Iñaki Urdangarin, the Duke of Palma. It eventually led to an investigation which requested information of King Juan Carlos finances. His decision to step down from his throne is said to be the best moment for change.

The throne of King Juan Carlos will be succeeded by one of the family members and that will be his son Prince Felipe. The king's son is a former Olympic yachtsman and is married to Letizia Ortiz. The royal couple has two daughters.
