Every mother is excited to deliver and hold their child, but a comatose mother wasn't able to do so when she gave birth to her son.
Melissa Carleton, 39 have wanted to have a child for years, her father John Farrell says. On Thursday, Carleton's family has been blessed with a baby boy, but her delivery is not just like any other mothers. After losing her consciousness and being in a comatose state, she was still able to deliver a healthy baby.
It is a heartbreaking moment when Carleton as a new mother won't be able to cuddle her baby in her arms and take care of her child. Being comatose for more than 10 weeks before her due date, Carleton gave birth to West Nathaniel Lande via Cesarean section. The newborn was extracted at around 10:56 a.m. weighing 5 pounds 9 ounces.
According to Brian Lande, Carleton's husband who barely left her side was delighted to have a healthy son at the same time feels sad about Melissa who was not able to be awake for that moment. He is also hopeful that one day her wife will recover from her condition and get a chance to hold her little one and assume her role as a mom. Carleton, a marriage and family therapist has been enjoying her first pregnancy and is already preparing for motherhood when she suddenly started having earthquakes.
In her second trimester, medical testing revealed that she has a benign brain tumor. According to reports, she originally planned to do the surgery to remove the tumor after she delivers her baby, but an episode of seizure prompted the doctors to perform the emergency procedure. Doctors claim that the surgery went well and it was the seizure that caused damage to her brain and left her in a comatose state just before she could give birth to her little one.
Although Carleton is comatose, she is able to open her eyes and squeeze somebody else's hand. Before she gave birth, she reportedly spent a few moments with her husband. After the delivery, Carleton woke up a little bit when her baby came into the room and first cried. Moreover, a Facebook community page was reportedly created to help raise funds for the family.
