Gloomy Sunday: Famous Song of Love and Death

Gloomy Sunday movie bears love and mystery.

The movie adaptation of Gloomy Sunday which was filmed on 1999 was actually based on the novel by Nick Barkow. The fictional story tells the creation of the song "Gloomy Sunday" which was written and composed by the Hungarian pianist Rezső Seress during the 1930s. It was first released on October 1999 in Germany which centers on a tragic love triangle and betrayal which took place in Budapest.

. The movie was adapted from the song of Seress which was sung by different artists including Billy Holiday who made it popular in the English society and was set during the era of World War II. Its original title was Ein Lied von Liebe und Tod or when translated to English means Gloomy Sunday - A Song of Love and Death.

The movie starts as Laszlo, a restaurant owner and Ilona, his lover, hiring a pianist named András to play in their restaurant. András fell in love with Ilona and Ilona feels the same way though she is still in love with Laszlo. It is during ilona's birthday that András feeling inspired, wrote the song Gloomy Sunday which is always played in their restaurant.

The song became popular but its melancholic melody is feared by the public as it seems to trigger series of suicides. When Budapest was captured by Germany, their friend Hans, now an officer returns that helped Laszlo who was a Jew to escape. However, the story tells that Hans have betrayed them by saving other Jewish family instead due to a much higher pay. András on the other hand shot himself with a pistol and Ilona was left being pregnant in the end. Mystery about who the baby's father is remained unknown in the movie.

"A beautiful period piece, set against one of the world's glorious cities, adding poignancy..." Kevin Thomas of Los Angeles Times said.
