Many travelers flock to Europe each year to enjoy all the art in its many forms that the continent has to offer. Those who love art head to Amsterdam typically have a special museum in their itinerary. It's none other than the Van Gogh Museum.

Located in Museum Square, which is in Amsterdam South, Van Gogh Museum houses the largest collection of works by Vincent Van Gogh. 

If you're heading to the museum, here are some things to keep in mind to a smooth, hassle-free experience. 

Ticketing and Opening Hours

If you're planning to head to the museum and buy your tickets there, hold your horses. Tickets should be bought online and not at the museum itself. 

Each ticket costs €22, but entrance is free for those who are 18 years old and below. It should be noted that the museum is no longer part of the I Amsterdam City Card. You can book tickets by clicking here

Permanent Collection

While the museum does hold temporary exhibits, its main attraction is its permanent exhibition that features Van Gogh's works. Among the paintings that you will come across during the tour are Sunflowers, The Bedroom, and Almond Blossom

Aside from paintings, Van Gogh's drawings and letters are also part of the permanent exhibition.

Museum Shop and Dining Options

If you want to take a break from looking at Van Gogh's works, you can opt to have food and drinks at the restaurant in the Rietveld building. The museum also has cafes in the Atrium as well as floor 0. 

When you're about to end your visit, make sure to drop by the shop and buy something to bring home with you. The museum shop is full of Van Gogh-related products. There is also a bookstore within the premises for bookworms who'd rather bring home a book. 

House Rules 

Here are some important things to keep in mind while at the museum:

  •  Avoid bringing bags larger than 45×25×25 cm, wheeled suitcases or trolleys of any size as you may be refused entry
  • Photography is allowed provided that you do no use flash, lamps, tripods, and selfie sticks
  • Taking videos inside the museum is not allowed
  • Food and drinks are not allowed inside the museum, especially in the exhibition galleries
