Traveling has never been so much easier with the advent of the digital age. If you need to be online even while you're traveling abroad, you simply need to choose among the best international phone plans available in the market now.

Whether you're using one of those phones called a "world phone" that runs on a GSM network or one that runs on a CDMA, there's a variety of international phone plans to choose from, according to Tom's Guide. Verizon's TravelPass charges $2 each day you're staying in Mexico or Canada with the same caps on talk, text and data as your domestic plan. If you're staying anywhere else that's still included in its list of 100 other countries, the daily rate goes up to $10.

Verizon also offers an alternative international phone plan that's on a monthly basis or a pay-as-you-go rate. AT&T recommends a variety of choices from Unlimited Plus and Unlimited Choice plans which are best used in Mexico or Canada; International Day Pass for those heading to Europe, the Caribbean, Latin America or the Asia Pacific; AT&T Passport for those heading to other parts of the world; and an à la carte service.

Sprint made the choices simpler by offering two types of international phone plans. Both Sprint Global Roaming and Sprint Open World come free for subscribers with a monthly plan, but the latter offers better high-speed data. T-Mobile even topped Sprint with offering the simplest solutions by focusing on just one roaming plan. T-Mobile One unlimited plan offers travelers with unlimited text and 2G data in over 140 countries.

For travelers who prefer prepaid international phone plans, NerdWallet recommends Google's Project Fi and MetroPCS. Project Fi offers 3G data speeds abroad at $10/GB but you can only use it on the four Nexus phones available. On the other hand, MetroPCS remains the only other prepaid carrier offering roaming plans.
